The miracle trick to permanently get rid of midges in the kitchen

1

Are you tired of seeing gnats swirling around your kitchen? We give you the infallible trick to manage to get rid of these small flying insects in a way that is as effective as it is lasting.

A cork in the fruit basket

Incredible but true, a simple cork placed in a fruit basket will allow you to eliminate the gnats that invade your kitchen. And for good reason: midges have a powerful sense of smell that hates the smell of cork. Installing a wine cork, cut in half, in the middle of a basket of fruit and vegetables will put the gnats to flight. Added benefit: the cork stopper will also keep your fruit in shape for longer. If you don’t have a cork on hand, know that you can use a clove of garlic or cloves in the same way. Gnats do not like these smells either and will therefore stay away from your kitchen. Also remember to remove from the fruit basket those that are damaged at the risk of attracting gnats.

black soap

The black soap will notably help you in the fight against midges which come to lodge in the green plants which decorate your kitchen as well as on your aromatic plants. To do this,

  • mix in a sprayer a liter of lukewarm water,
  • a teaspoon of baking soda
  • a tablespoon of liquid black soap.

Shake the sprayer to mix all the ingredients well before spraying the resulting product on the plants. Do not worry: these natural products do not represent any danger for your green plants. This mixture will therefore allow you to get rid of midges but also any aphids.

cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar will allow you to make a formidable trap for gnats. Indeed, these insects appreciate the smell of cider vinegar which will therefore attract midges to this homemade trap. To make a gnat trap, you will need a glass jar with a lid. Firstly,

  • make several holes in the lid using a knife or screwdriver.
  • Then pour two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into the jar
  • put the cover, now drilled, back in place.
  • Feel free to add a little lemon juice to the cider vinegar to make the mixture even more attractive to gnats.
  • Place this trap on the work surface.

The gnats will enter the jar through the small holes you drilled but will not be able to come out. Know that you can replace cider vinegar just as effectively with syrup, a few drops of dishwashing liquid, beer or even red wine or small pieces of meat. If you don’t have a glass jar available, you can also use a bottle.

Clean the pipes

Midges are also strongly attracted to standing water. They are therefore happy to install themselves in the pipes that are in your kitchen. In order to clean your pipes correctly and naturally, pour your choice of green solutions, coffee grounds, white vinegar or baking soda into your sink before turning on the hot water tap. The gnats will then not be able to get out of the pipes in time and will be carried away by the current. And your pipes will also be cleaned! Also remember never to leave dirty dishes lying around in your sink, which would contribute to an invasion of gnats.

Essential oils

Some essential oils will act as real repellents on midges. You can place a few small pieces of sponge soaked in lavender or tea tree essential oil in the kitchen, or diffuse peppermint essential oil in a diffuser designed for this purpose. You can also sprinkle a mixture of 100 ml of water and 8 drops of geranium essential oil, or water with white vinegar and lavender essential oil, in the kitchen. Choose the essential oil you want to use based on your preferences, all of which have the same effectiveness against gnats.
