Colored hair, more than others, deserves regular maintenance to preserve its shine and radiance. Are you worried that your magnificent color will fade and lose its density? Are you disappointed with your new color? Sometimes the result is not what you had imagined. Why not do a hair patina? This technique allows you to extend the life of your color while illuminating your hair, we tell you more!

What is a hair patina?

When your hairdresser offered to do a patina for your hair, you probably had a moment of absence wondering what he meant by that. Let’s start by explaining to you what it consists of: The patina is a hair treatment that allows you to restore your color to its full shine but also to highlight your reflections by depositing a light veil of color on the surface of the hair. This veil will make your hair radiant while nourishing it and blurring unwanted reflections.

As a general rule, patinas are created from vegetable oils containing complementary and neutralizing pigments which make it possible to correct certain reflections or to revive the color. Hair patinas are suitable for both brown and blonde hair. On the polar blond, this technique prevents it from turning or yellowing: purple pigments neutralize the yellow reflections and thus restore radiance to your lengths. For brown hair, which may turn cow’s tail red, your hairdresser will apply a patina containing green pigments which will neutralize the unwanted orange shades.

Which patina to choose for your hair?

The patina is suitable for all hair types, whether curly, frizzy or straight, the color of your hair will determine which patina to choose.

If you have purple highlights, you can use a yellow patina to neutralize them. Gold or copper patinas can also warm up cool tones and add more depth to your color.

If it’s copper highlights you want to tone down, an ash, silver or purple patina will work to neutralize the warm highlights. The patina is also an excellent technique for reviving a color and illuminating dull hair, it also makes it possible to bring nuance and reflections to a tone-on-tone coloring.

Hair patina can be done immediately after coloring or a few weeks later when the color begins to fade. It is particularly suitable for correcting purple or copper reflections but also for reviving the color by bringing it shine. The patina can also make the color more even and homogeneous. In the case of visible roots, the patina makes it possible to melt the demarcation between the old color and the base color.

Can we do a patina on natural hair?

Patinas are absolutely not reserved for colored hair. They can be applied to natural hair to add nuance and shine to your hair. If you find that your hair lacks luster, this is the ideal solution. You can do this very simply at home with a store-bought patina. The hardest part being, as you have understood, choosing the right shade.

After your shampoo, coat your hair (wet but wrung out) with product, as you would with a hair mask. Apply all over hair, from roots to ends. for more precision you can use a coloring brush to draw the product strand by strand. Regarding the exposure time, refer to the instructions for your product. It can change depending on the brands. The duration may vary depending on the desired intensity but do not leave on for longer than the recommended time. In some cases the color could then absorb some of the complementary pigments. You can find color-enhancing shampoos on the market that will enhance your hair, however these products are less concentrated than professional products (to avoid any hair disaster). If you are unsure of mastering the application, go to your hairdresser for a guaranteed result.
