Sucralose (Splenda) damages DNA and should be avoided according to researchers

A substance that forms during the digestion of sucralose (Splenda), a sugar substitute, damages DNA, shows a study published in May 2023 in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health.

The researchers consider these results so worrying that they advise people to stop consuming products that contain them.

Sucralose (E955) is sold under the Splenda brand and is also found in a multitude of foods.

Previous work by the research team established that several fat-soluble compounds are produced in the gut after sucralose ingestion. One such compound is sucralose-6-acetate.

Our new work establishes that sucralose-6-acetate is genotoxicthat is, it damages DNA, says Susan Schiffman of North Carolina State University. The researchers also found that traces of this substance “can be found in over-the-counter sucralose, even before it is consumed and metabolized“.

The European Food Safety Authority has set a threshold of toxicological concern for all genotoxic substances at 0.15 micrograms per person per day“says the researcher.

Gold, “our work suggests that the traces of sucralose-6-acetate present in a single daily sucralose-sweetened drink exceed this threshold. And that doesn’t even take into account the amount of sucralose-6-acetate produced as metabolites after sucralose consumption.“.

Researchers exposed human blood cells to sucralose-6-acetate in vitro to examine markers of genotoxicity. They found that the substance is indeed genotoxic.

They also exposed human intestinal tissue to sucralose and sucralose-6-acetate. “Other studies have shown that sucralose can harm gut health, so we wanted to see what’s going on there.», explains the researcher.

Both of these substances caused “leaky gut”. They made the wall of the intestine more permeable. “A leaky gut is problematic because it means that substances that would normally be eliminated from the body through the stool leak out of the intestine and are absorbed into the bloodstream.»

The researchers also looked at the genetic activity of intestinal cells. “We found that intestinal cells exposed to sucralose-6-acetate showed increased activity in genes linked to oxidative stress, inflammation and carcinogenicity.“.

This work raises many concerns about the potential health effects of sucralose and its metabolites.“, conclude the researchers.

It is time to re-examine the safety and regulatory status of sucralose, as there is growing evidence that it poses significant risks. At the very least, I encourage people to avoid products that contain it. It’s something you shouldn’t consumeconcludes the researcher.

In May 2023, theWorld Health Organization (WHO) has published an advisory recommending avoiding the consumption of sweeteners. Even for people wishing to lose weight, using non-sugar sweeteners such as sucralose and stevia might do more harm than good», Considers the WHO. Studies have also suggested that sweeteners make you gain weight.

The most common non-sweetened sweeteners, listed by the WHO, are acesulfame K, aspartame, advantame, cyclamates, neotame, saccharin, sucralose, stevia and stevia derivatives.
